Présentation

The Rennes Institute of Chemical Sciences (ISCR) is pleased to welcome in Rennes Simon Boehme (Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, ETH Zürich / Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Empa) on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The conference will take place at 11:00 am in Grandjean Amphitheater, building 10B, Beaulieu Campus.

**Abstract** Colloidal metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals are bright solution-processable nanoscale emitters with the chemical formula ABX3, where A is a monovalent cation, B a divalent metal cation (chiefly Pb2+), and X a halide anion. While they have already demonstrated commercial relevance in a range of classical light-emitting devices, including displays and LEDs, they are increasingly considered promising building blocks also for quantum light applications, ranging from quantum computing and quantum communication to quantum sensing and quantum imaging. Chemically, they belong to the family of colloidal quantum dots. This material class, awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023, typically comprises an inorganic semiconductor core as the optically active entity, capped by a passivating layer of organic ligands that confer solution processability and electronic quality. As one of the newest members of this family, perovskite nanocrystals introduced a range of unusual properties: Structurally, they feature an exceptionally high degree of dynamic disorder (entropy). Optically, they excel with a record-high near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and record-fast radiative decay at cryogenic temperatures. In this colloquium, we will jointly dive into this apparent conundrum and explore how chemistry can address challenges and opportunities in this material class, particularly in the context of (quantum) light emission.
